In the third phase of addressing the "News Title" issue, the focus shifts to collaborative self solutions, where both participants work together to develop actionable solutions for themselves as well as optionally helping the other if necessary.
Each person is encouraged to identify and articulate specific plans for addressing the issue using “I” statements and targeting their own observable behaviors. For example, one might say, “I plan to ensure that I actively listen and acknowledge your concerns during our discussions by asking clarifying questions and reflective listening.”
It is crucial that this phase remains constructive and non-judgmental, with neither participant resorting to name-calling or pessimism. Instead, feedback should be given in a supportive manner, aiming to refine and enhance each other’s proposed solutions. If one person’s self-solution seems underdeveloped, the other can offer constructive feedback, such as, “I appreciate your idea, but could we also consider setting specific times for our discussions to ensure we both have undivided attention?”
This approach fosters a collaborative environment where both participants feel valued and motivated to contribute to resolving the issue effectively.
Example:
“I will plan to give 30 minutes of support right when I get home and then I will get 30 minutes of ‘me time.’ I’ll also perk my ears for pineapples to indicate that I am not listening.”
“I’ll be more considerate of your needs after work and not intrude on your ‘me time’. I’ll work on being more grateful.”
